1. Carcinoembryonic antigen

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations

Protein measured in blood as a tumor marker, mainly to monitor colorectal cancer after surgery and during treatment of metastatic disease. A rising level can signal recurrence before it appears on imaging.

Example: Postoperative CEA rose from 2.1 to 14.8 ng/mL; CT chest, abdomen and pelvis ordered.

Described by Phil Gold and Samuel Freedman in 1965. CEA is not used for screening because it is often normal in early cancer and can be raised by smoking, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease and other cancers. Guidelines recommend measuring it every 3 to 6 months for several years after curative colorectal cancer surgery. In vascular surgery CEA means carotid endarterectomy.

2. Carotid endarterectomy

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Surgery that opens the carotid artery in the neck and removes plaque to prevent stroke. It is recommended for most patients with symptomatic narrowing of 70 to 99 percent and selected patients with 50 to 69 percent narrowing, ideally within two weeks of a TIA or minor stroke.

Example: Left CEA performed for 80% symptomatic stenosis after a TIA last week.

Large trials in the 1990s, NASCET and ECST, established its benefit for symptomatic stenosis. Benefit for asymptomatic narrowing is smaller and has been reexamined as medical therapy has improved. Complications include stroke, heart attack and cranial nerve injury. In oncology CEA means carcinoembryonic antigen, a tumor marker.

3. Cost-effectiveness analysis

Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations

Economic evaluation comparing the costs and health outcomes of two or more interventions, with outcomes in natural units such as life years gained, cases prevented or QALYs. Results are summarized as an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio.

Example: CEA found screening every 10 years cost-effective compared with no screening.

When outcomes are measured in QALYs, the analysis is often called cost-utility analysis (CUA). Reporting standards such as CHEERS guide publication. In vascular surgery CEA means carotid endarterectomy, and in oncology carcinoembryonic antigen.

4. Council of Economic Advisers

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

Three-member council in the Executive Office of the President that gives the President economic analysis and advice and writes the annual Economic Report of the President. Members, including the chair, are usually academic economists confirmed by the Senate.

Example: The CEA chair defended the administration's tariff policy in a television interview.

The Employment Act of 1946 established the council. Its staff is small and largely made up of economists on leave from universities. It differs from the National Economic Council, created in 1993, which coordinates economic policymaking rather than producing research. In medicine CEA means carcinoembryonic antigen, a tumor marker.
