CCTA stands for Coronary computed tomography angiography, a cardiology abbreviation.
CT scan with intravenous contrast, timed to the heartbeat, that shows the coronary arteries and plaque noninvasively. It is now a first-line test for stable chest pain in many patients with a low to intermediate likelihood of coronary disease.
Example: CCTA shows 50 to 69% stenosis of the proximal LAD with mixed plaque; CT-FFR requested.
Usage notes
UK NICE guidance in 2016 and the 2021 US chest pain guideline elevated CCTA as an initial test. A beta-blocker is often given to slow the heart for sharper images. CT-derived fractional flow reserve can estimate whether a narrowing limits blood flow, and a normal CCTA makes significant coronary disease very unlikely.
