CogAT stands for Cognitive Abilities Test, a standardized test abbreviation.
Group-administered reasoning test from Riverside Insights that measures verbal, quantitative and nonverbal reasoning from kindergarten through grade 12. Schools commonly use it to screen for gifted and talented programs and to compare ability with achievement results.
Example: Third graders who score at the 97th percentile on the CogAT are referred for gifted evaluation.
Usage notes
Results are reported as standard age scores, percentiles and stanines for each battery and a composite. Because it measures reasoning rather than learned content, schools often pair it with an achievement test such as the Iowa Assessments. The nonverbal battery uses shapes and figures to reduce language barriers for English learners.
