BAI stands for Beck Anxiety Inventory, a psychology abbreviation.

Self-report questionnaire of 21 symptoms, such as nervousness, a racing heart and fear of the worst happening, that measures the severity of anxiety over the past week. Scores range from 0 to 63.

Example: The clinic tracks BAI scores at intake and every fourth session.

Usage notes

Aaron Beck and colleagues published the BAI in 1988, designing it to separate anxiety from depression, which many earlier scales confused. Because many items describe bodily sensations, it emphasizes panic-like physical symptoms. Like the BDI, it measures severity and does not diagnose.
