ELM stands for Elaboration likelihood model, a psychology abbreviation.

Theory of persuasion proposing two routes: a central route, in which people carefully evaluate arguments, and a peripheral route, in which they rely on cues such as attractiveness, expertise or the number of arguments. Which route operates depends on motivation and ability to think about the message.

Example: According to the ELM, distracted viewers are swayed more by a celebrity endorser than by product facts.

Usage notes

Richard Petty and John Cacioppo developed the model in the late 1970s and 1980s. Attitudes formed through the central route tend to be more lasting and resistant to counterargument. It is widely taught in marketing, health communication and political science.
