ATO stands for Australian Taxation Office, a world government abbreviation.
Australia's principal revenue collection agency, which administers income tax, the goods and services tax (GST) and superannuation rules. The Australian financial year runs from July 1 to June 30.
Example: Lodge your tax return through myGov before the ATO deadline of October 31.
Usage notes
Individuals who lodge themselves must generally do so by October 31, while registered tax agents can lodge later. Each taxpayer has a tax file number (TFN). The ATO also oversees self-managed superannuation funds. It is sometimes confused with the US IRS, whose role is similar.
