APTC stands for Advance premium tax credit, a public program abbreviation also used in medicine.
Subsidy for health insurance bought through an ACA marketplace that is paid in advance each month directly to the insurer to lower the enrollee's premium. It is reconciled on the enrollee's tax return using Form 8962.
Example: Her APTC lowered her monthly premium from $480 to $95.
Usage notes
If actual income turns out higher than estimated, the enrollee may have to repay some of the advance credit. Enhanced subsidies enacted in 2021 and extended in 2022 removed the upper income limit for eligibility and were scheduled to expire after 2025, which became a central issue in the 2025 federal shutdown.
