ANG stands for Air National Guard, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
Air Force component of the National Guard, flying fighters, tankers, airlifters and other aircraft from bases in every state and providing a large share of the Air Force's air defense and aerial refueling capability.
Example: An ANG fighter wing scrambled two F-16s to intercept the unresponsive aircraft.
Usage notes
The Air National Guard was created as a separate reserve component in 1947 alongside the independent Air Force. Like the Army Guard, its units serve both state and federal missions. ANG also abbreviates the country code for Angola in some systems.
