AFI
Stands forAmniotic fluid index
CategoriesMedical

AFI stands for Amniotic fluid index, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Ultrasound estimate of amniotic fluid volume obtained by adding the deepest vertical fluid pockets in four quadrants of the uterus, in centimeters. Values of 5 cm or less suggest oligohydramnios, and 24–25 cm or more polyhydramnios.

Example: AFI 4.2 cm at 39 weeks, oligohydramnios; recommend induction.

Usage notes

Many guidelines now prefer the single deepest pocket (under 2 cm defines oligohydramnios) because using AFI leads to more interventions without better outcomes. Low fluid can reflect ruptured membranes, placental insufficiency or fetal kidney problems. Excess fluid is associated with diabetes and some fetal anomalies.
