AFCON stands for Africa Cup of Nations, a soccer (Association football) abbreviation.
Continental championship for African national teams, organized by the Confederation of African Football and usually held every two years. It is among the world's most-watched international tournaments.
Example: Ivory Coast won AFCON on home soil in February 2024 after nearly being eliminated in the group stage.
Usage notes
First held in 1957 with three teams. Egypt won seven titles between 1957 and 2010. Because the tournament has often been played in January and February, European clubs lose players mid-season. Pronounced "AF-con".
