1. After extra time

Sports · Soccer (Association Football) Abbreviations

Notation added to a score when a knockout match was decided during extra time, such as "2-1 (aet)". If the score was still level after extra time, the penalty shootout result is shown separately.

Example: Cup final: Rovers 2-1 United (aet).

Usually written in lowercase in British results listings. Extra time consists of two 15-minute halves. Records list goals in extra time with the match totals, but shootout goals are not counted in players' scoring statistics.

2. Aetatis (aged, at the age of) (aet.)

Writing & Everyday · Latin Abbreviations

Records a person's age, typically on portraits, tomb inscriptions and memorial plaques. It is followed by a number and often paired with the year the picture was painted or the person died.

Example: The panel portrait is inscribed "Anno 1532 aet. 34," giving both the year and the sitter's age.

Also written aetat. or ae.; the full phrase is often anno aetatis suae, "in the year of his or her age." Because "in the 34th year" can technically mean 33 years completed, historians treat such inscriptions with care when working out birth dates. Renaissance painters such as Hans Holbein the Younger often lettered sitters' ages this way.
