1. Advanced Encryption Standard
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
The symmetric block cipher used worldwide to encrypt data at rest and in transit, from Wi-Fi and HTTPS to disk encryption and messaging apps. It works on 128-bit blocks with 128-, 192- or 256-bit keys.
Example: Backups are encrypted with AES-256 before they leave the office.
Selected by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology in 2001 after a public competition; the winning Rijndael algorithm was designed by Belgian cryptographers Joan Daemen and Vincent Rijmen. Modern processors include AES-NI instructions that make it very fast. No practical attack breaks properly used AES; real failures come from weak keys or misused modes. GCM mode, which adds authentication, is standard in TLS.
2. Automated Export System
Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations
US government system through which exporters or their agents file Electronic Export Information on shipments leaving the country, receiving an Internal Transaction Number (ITN) as confirmation.
Example: The ITN from AES has to appear on the bill of lading before the carrier will load.
Filing is generally required when a single commodity classification exceeds $2,500 in value or when an export license is needed, as well as for certain destinations.
