WVU stands for West Virginia University, a university abbreviation.
West Virginia's flagship public university in Morgantown, founded in 1867. Its Mountaineers compete in the Big 12, and its Personal Rapid Transit system, opened in 1975, still carries students between campuses in driverless cars.
Example: After WVU home wins, fans traditionally sing "Country Roads".
Usage notes
The university's academic medical center, WVU Medicine, is the state's largest health system. Alumni include basketball star Jerry West, whose silhouette is the basis for the NBA logo. The Mountaineers moved from the Big East to the Big 12 in 2012.
