CategoriesSports

BABIP stands for Batting average on balls in play, a baseball abbreviation.

Batting average counting only balls put in play, excluding home runs and strikeouts. League-wide it usually sits near .300, so an unusually high or low figure often signals luck that will even out.

Example: His .380 BABIP suggests a regression is coming for this hot start.

Usage notes

Grew out of Voros McCracken's 2001 research showing pitchers have little control over whether balls in play become hits, the basis of defense-independent pitching statistics. Fast runners and line-drive hitters can sustain above-average BABIP. Pronounced "BAB-ip".
