W-3 stands for Warrant officer pay grade 3, a military pay grade abbreviation.
Middle warrant officer pay grade, held by Army CW3s and Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard CWO3s. W-3s are advanced-level technical experts and supervisors, such as senior pilots, maintenance managers and intelligence technicians.
Example: Her promotion to W-3 came through on the same list as two other pilots in the battalion.
Usage notes
Promotion to W-3 is by centralized selection board. Because warrant officers enter after enlisted careers or, for Army aviators, directly from training, W-3s often have widely differing total years of service, which the pay table accounts for through longevity steps.
