E-1 stands for Enlisted pay grade 1, a military pay grade abbreviation.
Lowest US military pay grade, held by new recruits: Private in the Army and Marine Corps, Seaman Recruit in the Navy and Coast Guard, Airman Basic in the Air Force and Specialist 1 in the Space Force. Members with less than four months of service receive a slightly lower E-1 pay rate.
Example: Recruits who enlist without college credit or other qualifications start at E-1 and earn the entry rate during boot camp.
Usage notes
The letter E stands for enlisted, and DoD style writes the grade with a hyphen (E-1), though E1 is common in informal writing. Recruits can enter at E-2 or E-3 with college credit, JROTC experience, Eagle Scout or Gold Award status or certain enlistment options, which raises pay from the first day. The NATO equivalent code is OR-1.
