W-1 stands for Warrant officer pay grade 1, a military pay grade abbreviation.

Entry warrant officer pay grade, held by Army Warrant Officers 1 (WO1) and Marine Corps Warrant Officers (WO). Holders are appointed by warrant rather than commission and serve as technical specialists, from helicopter pilots to communications experts.

Example: Flight school graduates are paid at W-1 until promotion to CW2 about two years later.

Usage notes

The Navy and Coast Guard have generally appointed warrant officers directly at W-2. The Air Force stopped appointing warrant officers in 1959, and its last warrant officers retired in the early 1990s. NATO uses its own WO-1 to WO-5 codes for warrant officers.
