VCUG stands for Voiding cystourethrogram, a medical imaging abbreviation.
Fluoroscopic study in which contrast is instilled into the bladder through a urinary catheter and images are taken during filling and urination. It is the main test for vesicoureteral reflux in children after febrile urinary tract infections and also reveals posterior urethral valves in boys.
Example: VCUG: bilateral grade III vesicoureteral reflux.
Usage notes
Reflux is graded I to V by an international system according to how far contrast travels up the ureter and how much it dilates the collecting system. Radionuclide cystography or contrast-enhanced voiding ultrasound can follow reflux with less radiation. Child life specialists often help prepare children for the catheter.
