CategoriesMedical

CECT stands for Contrast-enhanced computed tomography, a medical imaging abbreviation.

CT scan performed after intravenous iodinated contrast, which highlights blood vessels and vascular organs and makes tumors, abscesses, inflammation and active bleeding easier to detect. Scanning can be timed to arterial, portal venous or delayed phases depending on the clinical question.

Example: CECT abdomen shows a rim-enhancing collection in the right lower quadrant.

Usage notes

Oral contrast may be added when bowel detail matters. Before injection, staff check kidney function and prior reactions, and patients with previous allergic-like reactions may receive steroid premedication. Multiphase scans, such as a liver protocol, image the same organ several times after one injection.
