USAFA stands for United States Air Force Academy, a military unit and organization abbreviation also used in education.
Four-year federal service academy near Colorado Springs, Colorado, that educates cadets for commissions in the US Air Force and US Space Force. Graduates earn a bachelor of science degree and serve at least five years on active duty.
Example: Ten USAFA graduates commissioned directly into the Space Force this spring.
Usage notes
Congress authorized the academy in 1954, and its first class graduated in 1959. The Cadet Chapel, with its seventeen aluminum spires, is a National Historic Landmark. Graduates headed to pilot training incur a longer service commitment because of the cost of flight training.
