UIP stands for Usual interstitial pneumonia, a respiratory abbreviation.
Pattern of lung scarring seen on CT and biopsy, with patchy fibrosis concentrated at the bases and under the pleura, honeycombing and traction bronchiectasis. It is the hallmark pattern of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis but also occurs in rheumatoid arthritis, asbestosis and chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
Example: HRCT: basal-predominant subpleural reticulation with honeycombing, typical UIP pattern.
Usage notes
On biopsy, UIP shows "temporal heterogeneity," with normal lung, established scar and active fibroblastic foci side by side. International guidelines classify CT findings as UIP, probable UIP, indeterminate or suggestive of an alternative diagnosis, and a typical CT pattern can make biopsy unnecessary. "Usual" reflects that it was the most common pattern when the classification was created.
