SOBOE stands for Shortness of breath on exertion, a respiratory abbreviation.

Breathlessness that occurs with physical activity, such as climbing stairs or walking uphill, and eases with rest; common in British and Commonwealth clinical notes. It is an early symptom of heart failure, COPD, anemia and interstitial lung disease.

Example: SOBOE after one flight of stairs, worsening over 6 months; spirometry and echo requested.

Usage notes

Equivalent to the American abbreviation DOE (dyspnea on exertion). Exertional limitation is quantified with scales such as the modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale and NYHA class, or objectively with a six-minute walk test. Worsening exercise tolerance is often noticed by family before the patient reports it.
