Joint federal-state program that pays temporary weekly benefits to workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. Most states pay up to 26 weeks, though several pay less, and benefits typically replace part of prior wages up to a state maximum.
Example: He filed for UI the day after his position was eliminated.
Created by the Social Security Act of 1935, it is financed mainly by state and federal payroll taxes on employers under SUTA and FUTA. During recessions Congress often extends benefits; in 2020 pandemic programs added $600 a week and covered gig workers. Weekly initial jobless claims are a closely watched economic indicator.
2. User interface
Technology & Computing · Computer Abbreviations
Everything a person sees and touches to operate a device or program: screens, buttons, menus, text, icons, sounds and gestures. In product teams, UI design concentrates on layout, typography, visual style and the behavior of interactive controls.
Example: The new UI moves the settings button to the top-right corner of the dashboard.
Pronounced as letters. UI is often paired with UX, as in "UI/UX designer", but the two differ: UI concerns the interface itself, while UX covers the whole experience of using a product, including whether it solves the user's problem. Physical products have UIs too, such as the knobs on a stove or a car's touchscreen.
