TVUS stands for Transvaginal ultrasound, a medical imaging abbreviation.
Pelvic ultrasound performed with a slender probe placed in the vagina, giving clearer images of the uterus, ovaries and early pregnancy than scanning through the abdomen. It confirms and dates early pregnancy, helps exclude ectopic pregnancy, measures endometrial thickness and evaluates ovarian cysts and pelvic pain.
Example: TVUS at 6 weeks: intrauterine gestational sac with yolk sac and fetal pole.
Usage notes
Also called endovaginal ultrasound (EVUS) or TVS. A gestational sac is usually visible once serum hCG passes a discriminatory level of roughly 1,500 to 3,500 mIU/mL. The probe is covered with a disposable sheath and high-level disinfected between patients. A transabdominal study is the alternative when a patient declines.
