TUG stands for Timed Up and Go, a rehabilitation abbreviation.
Mobility test in which the patient stands from a chair, walks 3 meters, turns, returns and sits down while being timed. Longer times indicate poorer mobility and higher fall risk.
Example: TUG 18.4 sec with FWW; high fall risk, balance program started.
Usage notes
Published by Diane Podsiadlo and Sandra Richardson in 1991. The CDC's STEADI fall prevention program uses 12 seconds or more as a sign of increased fall risk in older adults. Variants add a cognitive or manual task to test dual-tasking.
