5xSTS stands for Five Times Sit to Stand Test, a rehabilitation abbreviation.
Timed test in which the patient stands up from a chair and sits down five times as quickly as possible with arms crossed. It measures leg strength, balance and transfer ability.
Example: 5xSTS 17.2 sec without arms; fall risk discussed.
Usage notes
Longer times indicate poorer lower limb strength and higher fall risk; thresholds differ for older adults, stroke and vestibular disorders. A related test, the 30-second chair stand, counts repetitions in 30 seconds and is part of the CDC STEADI toolkit.
