1. Maximum temperature

Medical · Patient Assessment Abbreviations

Highest temperature recorded over a stated period, usually the previous 24 hours, reported on rounds and in progress notes to show the fever pattern at a glance.

Example: Tmax 39.2 overnight, now 37.4 after acetaminophen; cultures pending.

Pronounced "T-max". Some notes add Tcurrent or Tc for the latest reading. Fever curves can be blunted by acetaminophen or ibuprofen given on a schedule, which should be noted when interpreting Tmax. In pharmacology the same term means the time to reach peak drug concentration, a different idea.

2. Time to maximum concentration

Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations

Time after a dose at which a drug reaches its highest blood level. A short Tmax means fast absorption and onset; extended-release products are designed to have a later, flatter peak.

Example: Food delayed Tmax from 1 to 3 hours without changing total absorption.

Pronounced "T-max". Tmax helps decide when to draw peak levels and when to expect side effects such as dizziness from blood pressure drugs. In vital-sign charting, Tmax means the patient's maximum temperature in a given period, an unrelated use.
