TLE stands for Temporal lobe epilepsy, a neurology abbreviation.
Most common form of focal epilepsy in adults, with seizures arising in the temporal lobe and often preceded by an aura such as déjà vu, fear or a rising sensation in the stomach. Seizures typically involve impaired awareness, lip smacking and hand fumbling.
Example: Seizures begin with an epigastric rising sensation, then staring and lip smacking; MRI shows left mesial temporal sclerosis: TLE.
Usage notes
Mesial temporal sclerosis, scarring of the hippocampus, is the most common underlying lesion. Drug-resistant TLE responds well to surgery: a 2001 randomized trial by Wiebe and colleagues found that surgery made patients seizure-free far more often than medication alone. Laser ablation offers a less invasive surgical option.
