SXSW stands for South by Southwest, a music abbreviation.
Annual festival and conference in Austin, Texas, each March, combining music showcases, film premieres and technology and media panels. Hundreds of emerging bands play official showcases across the city.

Usage notes
Started in 1987 as a music festival; film and "interactive" (technology) sections were added later. Twitter gained wide attention at SXSW in 2007. The name parodies Alfred Hitchcock's film North by Northwest, and it is often shortened to "South by".
