SSPL stands for Server Side Public License, a software abbreviation.
Source-available license created by MongoDB in 2018 that requires any company offering the software as a service to release the source code of its whole service stack. The Open Source Initiative does not recognize it as open source.
Example: After Elasticsearch adopted SSPL, AWS forked it into OpenSearch.
Usage notes
SSPL is based on the AGPL but extends the source-sharing duty to management, monitoring and backup software around the service, which critics say makes compliance practically impossible. Elastic adopted it in 2021 and added the AGPL as an alternative in 2024. Debian and Fedora removed MongoDB from their repositories because of the license.
