SSBN stands for Ballistic missile submarine, nuclear-powered, a naval ship abbreviation.
Symbol for US nuclear-powered submarines that carry submarine-launched ballistic missiles, currently the Ohio class with Trident II D5 missiles, which provide the most survivable part of the nuclear triad.
Example: An SSBN slipped out of Kings Bay for another strategic deterrent patrol.
Usage notes
Sailors call them "boomers." Each SSBN has two complete crews, Blue and Gold, alternating patrols to keep the boat at sea. The Columbia class, with USS District of Columbia as lead ship, will replace the Ohio class.
