SLBM stands for Submarine-launched ballistic missile, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Ballistic missile carried and launched by a submarine, usually while submerged, providing the most survivable leg of a nuclear triad because submarines are hard to locate.
Example: Each Ohio-class submarine can carry up to 20 Trident II D5 SLBMs.
Usage notes
The US Navy's Trident II D5 missiles are also used by the United Kingdom's Vanguard-class submarines. The Columbia-class submarine will replace the Ohio class. The first US SLBM, Polaris, entered service in 1960.
