CategoriesTransportation & Travel

SBB stands for Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (Swiss Federal Railways), a rail and transit abbreviation.

Switzerland's national railway, known as CFF in French and FFS in Italian, famous for punctuality, dense timetables and integrated connections with buses and boats. Swiss residents ride trains more than almost anyone in the world.

Example: SBB connections are timed so your train arrives in Zurich three minutes before the Lucerne train leaves.

Usage notes

The SBB station clock, designed by Hans Hilfiker in 1944, became a design icon; its second hand pauses at the top of each minute so trains can depart on time. The Gotthard Base Tunnel, opened in 2016, is the world's longest railway tunnel at 57 kilometers. The SBB logo shows all three language abbreviations.
