CategoriesTexting & Internet Slang

ROFL stands for Rolling on the floor laughing, a texting and chat abbreviation.

Expresses uncontrollable laughter, a big step up from LOL, as if the writer had literally collapsed laughing. It was a staple of 1990s and 2000s chat rooms and instant messaging.

Example: Rofl, the cat just fell off the couch in slow motion.

Usage notes

Also written ROTFL. Now considered somewhat dated, with LMAO more common among younger users. "ROFLcopter," an ASCII-art helicopter made of the letters, became an early internet meme. Mostly harmless, though it may seem childish in work chat.
