1. Romania

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Romania, capital Bucharest, speaks a Romance language descended from Latin and became a full Schengen member on January 1, 2025. Its alpha-3 code changed from ROM to ROU in 2002, and the leu trades as RON.

Example: Romanian IBANs begin with RO and contain 24 characters.

In computing RO means read-only. The Carpathian Mountains and Transylvania make up much of the country's interior.

2. Run-on sentence

Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations

Correction mark for two or more independent clauses joined without proper punctuation or a conjunction, as in "I was tired I went to bed." The usual fixes are a period, a semicolon, or a comma plus a coordinating conjunction.

Example: Next to "It started raining we went inside," my teacher wrote RO and circled the gap.

Some teachers write "r-o" or "run-on" in full. Strictly, a run-on with no punctuation is a fused sentence, while one joined only by a comma is a comma splice, but many teachers use RO for both. A long sentence is not a run-on if it is correctly punctuated.
