CategoriesMedical

RML stands for Right middle lobe, a respiratory abbreviation.

Smallest lobe of the right lung, found only on the right side, lying against the right border of the heart between the horizontal and oblique fissures. Pneumonia here blurs the right heart border on a frontal chest x-ray.

Example: CXR: RML consolidation obscuring the right heart border, consistent with pneumonia.

Usage notes

The silhouette sign, loss of a normal border where two structures of similar density touch, localizes middle lobe disease. Middle lobe syndrome refers to recurrent or chronic collapse of this lobe, related to its long, narrow bronchus and limited collateral ventilation. The lingula is its counterpart in the left lung.
