1. Reversed
Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations
Subsequent-history phrase showing that a higher court reversed the decision being cited, as in "rev'd, 550 U.S. 1 (2007)". Citing a reversed decision without this notation is a serious error, because the cited holding may no longer be good law.
Example: Plaintiffs cite the district court's opinion, but it was rev'd, 75 F.4th 200 (5th Cir. 2023).
Variations include "rev'd on other grounds", which signals that the cited point may still have persuasive value, and "rev'd in part". Citators such as Shepard's (Lexis) and KeyCite (Westlaw) flag reversed decisions with red warning symbols. Like aff'd, it is italicized in Bluebook citations and followed by a comma.
2. Reverend (Revd)
Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations
British form of the abbreviation for Reverend, written without a period and used by the Church of England, the Church of Scotland and many UK publishers, as in "the Revd John Smith". It is the standard abbreviation in Crockford's Clerical Directory.
Example: The service will be led by the Revd Dr Paul Jones, vicar of St Mary's.
The longer forms are "the Revd Canon", "the Ven." for archdeacons and "the Rt Revd" for bishops. Oxford style omits periods in contractions ending in the word's last letter, which is why British writers use Revd and Dr without points. American publications normally use Rev. with a period.
