1. Reservation

Geography & Places · Geographic Feature Abbreviations

Shortens Reservation for American Indian reservations on maps and in documents, as in Navajo Res. or Pine Ridge Res.; informally many Native Americans call their home reservation the rez.

Example: Tribal elections on the Pine Ridge Res. drew record turnout.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs administers about 326 Indian land areas held in trust. The Navajo Nation's reservation, the largest, spans parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. In Canada the equivalent term is reserve.

2. Reservoir

Geography & Places · Geographic Feature Abbreviations

Marks an artificial lake created by a dam on maps and signs, as in Quabbin Res. in Massachusetts or Ashokan Res. in New York.

Example: The bike path around the Res. is about five miles long.

Res. also abbreviates reservation, residence and resolution, so map legends spell it out. Many reservoirs supply city drinking water, and swimming in them is often banned.

3. Resided (res.)

Writing & Everyday · Genealogy Abbreviations

Records where a person lived at a given date, as in "res. Dublin 1901," in genealogies and family-tree software. Residence records help track migrations between censuses.

Example: Res. 1910 at 22 Elm St, Lowell, Massachusetts, with wife and four children.

GEDCOM uses the tag RESI for residence events. City directories, censuses and voter rolls are common sources. In other contexts res. abbreviates research, reserve or resolution, as in a council's "res. no. 14."
