RCVS stands for Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, a neurology abbreviation.
Condition of temporary narrowing of brain arteries that typically causes recurrent sudden "thunderclap" headaches over one to three weeks, sometimes with stroke, seizures or bleeding on the brain's surface. Triggers include the postpartum period, serotonergic drugs, decongestants, cannabis and exertion.
Example: Four thunderclap headaches in a week after starting an SSRI; CTA shows multifocal beading: RCVS.
Usage notes
Angiography shows a "string of beads" appearance that resolves within about three months, which distinguishes it from vasculitis of the central nervous system, a disorder treated with immunosuppression. Calcium channel blockers such as nimodipine are often used, and glucocorticoids are avoided because they may worsen outcomes. Older names include Call-Fleming syndrome.
