PRVC stands for Pressure-regulated volume control, a respiratory abbreviation.
Adaptive ventilator mode that delivers a target tidal volume using the lowest pressure needed, adjusting the inspiratory pressure breath by breath as lung compliance changes. It combines the guaranteed volume of volume control with the decelerating flow of pressure control.
Example: PRVC Vt 400, rate 18, PEEP 10; peak pressures falling as compliance improves.
Usage notes
Different manufacturers market similar modes under names such as VC+ and AutoFlow. A drawback is that when a patient breathes harder, the ventilator may reduce support to maintain the target volume, increasing the patient's work. It is common in many intensive care units as an initial mode.
