PaO2 stands for Partial pressure of arterial oxygen, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Pressure exerted by oxygen dissolved in arterial blood, measured on an arterial blood gas and normally about 80 to 100 mmHg in healthy adults breathing room air at sea level. Divided by the inspired oxygen fraction, it gives the P/F ratio used to grade acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Example: PaO2 58 on FiO2 0.6: P/F ratio 97, severe ARDS by Berlin criteria.
Usage notes
The lowercase "a" means arterial, while PAO2 (capital A) is alveolar oxygen, and the difference between them is the A-a gradient. Normal PaO2 declines with age. On the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve an SpO2 of about 90 percent corresponds to a PaO2 near 60 mmHg, below which saturation falls steeply.
