ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID, an academic abbreviation.

Free, persistent 16-digit identifier for researchers that links them to their publications, grants and affiliations, distinguishing people with similar names. Many journals and funders, including the NIH for some applications, require or encourage an ORCID iD.

Example: Add your ORCID to the manuscript submission so the paper links to your profile.

Usage notes

ORCID is run by a nonprofit organization and launched its registry in 2012. Identifiers look like 0000-0002-1825-0097, with the final character serving as a checksum. Publishers can update researchers' ORCID records automatically when a paper is published.
