OHSS stands for Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Complication of fertility medications in which the ovaries enlarge and fluid shifts out of blood vessels into the abdomen, causing bloating, pain, nausea and, in severe cases, ascites, clots and kidney problems. Risk is highest with many follicles and high estrogen levels.
Example: Moderate OHSS day 5 after retrieval, ascites on ultrasound; oral fluids, daily weights, labs.
Usage notes
Prevention strategies include antagonist protocols, a GnRH agonist trigger instead of hCG, and freezing all embryos to avoid pregnancy-related worsening. People with PCOS are at higher risk. Severe OHSS has become uncommon with these approaches.
