OBR stands for Office for Budget Responsibility, a UK government abbreviation.
Independent UK fiscal watchdog that produces official forecasts for the economy and public finances alongside each Budget and assesses whether the government is meeting its fiscal rules.
Example: The OBR forecast left the Chancellor with only a narrow margin against the fiscal rules.
Usage notes
Created in 2010 by Chancellor George Osborne to remove forecasting from political control. Its absence from the September 2022 "mini-budget", which unsettled financial markets, led to a requirement that it publish forecasts for major fiscal events. Its forecasts often drive the size of tax and spending decisions.
