Three-star pay grade: Lieutenant General in the Army, Air Force, Space Force and Marine Corps, and Vice Admiral in the Navy and Coast Guard. O-9s command corps, numbered fleets, Marine expeditionary forces and major joint organizations.
Example: The President nominated the O-9 to lead the Army's largest corps.
Usage notes
Officers hold O-9 only while serving in a position designated for the grade, and the Senate must confirm each appointment. Retiring in the grade requires certification of satisfactory service. NATO code OF-8.
