NVP stands for Nevirapine, a drug abbreviation.
Older non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor for HIV, historically important for preventing mother-to-child transmission with a single dose given in labor and to the newborn in resource-limited countries.
Example: Infant NVP prophylaxis 2 mg/kg daily x 6 weeks per protocol.
Usage notes
The HIVNET 012 trial in Uganda, published in 1999, showed a single dose of nevirapine cut transmission by nearly half, transforming prevention in Africa. Single-dose use, however, often led to resistance. A boxed warning covers severe liver toxicity and skin reactions, highest in women with higher CD4 counts.
