Msgr. stands for Monsignor, a religious title abbreviation.
Honorific title granted by the pope to certain Catholic priests, usually for distinguished service or office in a diocese or the Vatican. Monsignors may wear purple trim on their cassocks and are addressed as "Monsignor".
Example: Msgr. Kelly served as rector of the cathedral for twenty years.
Usage notes
British usage abbreviates it Mgr. Since 2014, at Pope Francis's direction, new monsignor titles for diocesan priests have been limited to the rank of Chaplain of His Holiness and to priests aged 65 and older. In French, Monseigneur is also the style for bishops.
