MRes stands for Master of Research, a degree abbreviation.
One-year British postgraduate degree in which a large research project, rather than taught modules, makes up most of the credit. Funding councils often use it as the first year of a "1+3" doctoral training pathway leading into a PhD.
Example: The doctoral training partnership funds an MRes year followed by a three-year PhD.
Usage notes
Written M.Res. It offers more research training than a taught MSc but is shorter than an MPhil. Universities in Australia and France also offer research master's degrees under similar names. Students choosing between the MRes and the MSc usually decide based on whether they intend to pursue a PhD.
