MOGAD stands for Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease, a neurology abbreviation.
Inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system defined by antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein, causing optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, ADEM in children and brainstem attacks. It is distinct from both multiple sclerosis and aquaporin-4-positive NMOSD.
Example: Bilateral optic neuritis with optic disc swelling; MOG-IgG positive by cell-based assay: MOGAD.
Usage notes
International diagnostic criteria were published in 2023. Unlike NMOSD, recovery from attacks is often good, and many patients have a single episode, so long-term immunotherapy is reserved for relapsing disease. Testing uses live cell-based assays because low-titer results can be false positives. Children are affected more often than in NMOSD.
