MMSE stands for Mini-Mental State Examination, a neurology abbreviation.
Thirty-point questionnaire screening for cognitive impairment through orientation, registration, attention and calculation, recall, language and copying a drawing. Scores below about 24 suggest cognitive impairment, though results depend heavily on education and language.
Example: MMSE 21/30 with deficits in recall and orientation; neuropsychology referral placed.
Usage notes
Published by Marshal Folstein, Susan Folstein and Paul McHugh in 1975 and long the most widely used bedside cognitive screen. Its copyright is now enforced by a commercial publisher, which has encouraged use of free alternatives. It is less sensitive than the MoCA for mild cognitive impairment. Also called the Folstein test.
